Adult support events

Council back day

- Marjorie Kerr

West Lothian Council supported the first ever National Adult Support and Protection Day on Tuesday (February 20).

The Scottish Government’s ‘ Seen something? Say something’ campaign, aims to raise awareness of adult harm and encourage people to act on their instincts if they suspect someone may be at risk of harm.

Adult harm can take many forms from physical, psychological, sexual or financial exploitation to neglect. Often victims are unable to stand up for themselves due to factors such as personal circumstances, physical or learning disability, age or illness.

The campaign also aims to educate the public on the warning signs of abuse, such as unexplained cuts and bruises, refusal to talk about injuries, confusion or the appearance of nervousness around certain people.

Executive councillor for Social Policy, Angela Doran, said: “In West Lothian everyone has the right to be safe. If you are unable to protect yourself from being harmed it is important to tell someone. If you think you know someone who is being harmed, or is at risk of being harmed, you can and must tell someone.

“If you see something, say something. Reporting suspected harm only takes one anonymous phone call and the authorities can provide support to victims.”
