A West Lothian teenager has scooped a top place in a photography competition.

Ross Preston ( 15) from Linlithgow won the Junior Section Best Overall and Best Nature in South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture’s Annual Photography Competition.

His grandfather Roy Preston from Wishaw made a special effort to take Ross on a photography field trip to South Lanarkshire so he could enter the competition.

Roy said he is keen to encourage Ross to continue with his photography and saw the competition as a great way to help him build up his skills.

He said: “I’m a photographer myself and for about a year and a half I have been taking Ross on photography trips every Friday to help him develop his talent with a camera.

“I’m a member of the Alba Camera Club in Wishaw and a lot of our members enter the South Lanarkshire competition so I thought it would be a good opportunity for Ross.”

A selection of the winning photographs is on display in the Visitor Centre at Chatelherault Country Park near Hamilton and the exhibition will move to Calderglen Country Park in East Kilbride from March 5 to 19.

Chair of South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture Councillor David Watson, said he was impressed by the quality of the entrants to the competition and praised the winners.

He said: “The annual photography competition is a great opportunity to see the place we live, South Lanarkshire, through another person’s eyes.

“It is a real reminder of how lucky we are to have so much variety in nature, heritage and community on our own doorstep.

“I congratulate all the winners and all the talented photographers who took part.”
