Broxburn’s win puts them hot on Rose heels

- Broxburn Ath .......... 3 Bonnyrigg Rose ...... 1

Superleague Superleague Broxburn Athletic stunned Superleague leaders Bonnyrigg Rose as they inflicted a first defeat of the season on the visitors to continue their incredible run.

The victory means that the Albyn Park side jump to second in the table, just a point behind Rose, and extend their unbeaten league streak to a phenomenal 17 games.

Goals from Gordon Donaldson and Kieran Anderson put the hosts firmly in command at the interval before Zander Murray wrapped things up with a third for Athletic. It meant that Neil Martynuik’s effort for the visitors was little more than a consolation.

The final outcome was in stark contrast to the start of the game as Bonnyrigg were on the front foot and would have taken the lead as early as the fourth minute if not for a spectacular save from Connor Wallace.

The Athletic keeper thwarted a Wayne McIntosh header that appeared destined for the net. The same player then headed harmlessly over the bar a few minutes later as the Rose were unable to make their fast start count on the scoreboard.

Kieran McGachie fired wide from distance before McIntosh again was unable to get the better of Wallace.

Broxburn, having weathered the early storm, grew into the match and created their first genuine effort at goal on 35 minutes as Zander Miller’s strike was blocked and cleared.

They took the lead in the next passage of play as Anderson’s free-kick from the left was whipped into the box and met by the powerful head of Donaldson to put his side in front.

McGachie went agonisingly close to levelling almost immediately but his shot grazed the top of the bar.
