Honour for May

Star of Highland Games

- Sean O’Neil

A Bathgate woman who was chosen to be the chieftain of the 47th West Lothian Highland Games has been recognised in the Scottish Parliament for her tireless voluntary work.

May Ross (81) a member of Boghall Parish Church, was congratulated by cross-party MSPs for dedicating 35 years of her life to ensuring the annual event in Bathgate is a success.

Neil Findlay, who represents the Lothians region, described the 81-year-old as an “unsung hero”of her community.

Reverend Chris Galbraith, minister of Boghall Parish Church, said Mrs Ross had “tremendous commitment”to the community of Bathgate, including the church.

Mr Galbraith said:“We are all delighted for May and it is terrific recognition for all the time, effort and commitment she has shown not just to the games but to Bathgate over the years.

“When she signs up for something, she does so with 100 per cent. That is true of the church too where she worships every Sunday.

“She will be back high-fiving the Bathgate Academy students at the church Cosy Coffee event on Wednesday and serving them home baked cakes.”

Mr Findlay lodged a motion at Holyrood after Mrs Ross was chosen to be the Highland Games chieftain this year.

He said:“I think it is important to recognise the huge contribution volunteers make to our communities.”

“People like May who give their time and years of effort so that others can enjoy community festivities are unsung heroes.

“Parliamentary motions are one small way of putting their achievements on the record and alerting the wider public.”

The pensioner will be the figurehead at the annual event at the town’s Meadow Park on May 26.
