Lessons in fair trading

Pupils class acts

- Debbie Hall

Pupils at Seafield Primary School have been busy promoting Fairtrade in the village.

The youngsters held a Fairtrade Showcase for the parents of P2/3, P5/6 and the nursery and for anyone living in Seafield.

The event marked the beginning of the school’s Fairtrade Fortnight and the two classes and nursery pupils put on a show with facts, music, songs and dramas to share their knowledge on Fairtrade.

Afterwards there was a pop-up cafe where parents were invited to enjoy Fairtrade teas and coffees. There were raffle tickets sold to raise money and the prize was a Fairtrade hamper consisting of products donated by the parents of the primary school and nursery.

Laura Smith, principal teacher (acting), said: “We also had our rice on sale as we are taking part in a 90kg Rice Challenge, whereby if we sell 90kg of rice to raise money, we send a child from a rice farming family in Malawi to High School for one year.

“We are half way on our Rice Challenge and were blown away with the support from the parents and community, raising over £100 which is fantastic.

“From all of this work, we have been awarded with our second Fairtrade award, so we are now a Fairactive school.

“A big thanks to the parents and members of the community who supported us with their generous donations and attendance.”
