BIG BIRTHDAY
St Mary’s Primary in Bathgate celebrated its 60th anniversary with a special visit by Archbishop Leo Cushley of St Andrews and Edinburgh, who offered Holy Mass to mark the special occasion.
The special visit took place on February 23 and was a highlight of celebrations at the school to mark the event.
Head teacher Fiona McKerral said: “Mass was a joyful celebration and the school choir sang beautifully to lead the congregation of pupils, staff and guests, meanwhile the children’s prayerful participation in the Mass was a credit to the school and their families.”
St Mary’s was founded on February 27 1958 and was originally located in Livery Street, Bathgate, before moving to its present site on Whitburn Road.
Archbishop Cushley was joined in offering the Mass by Canon Allan Chambers, the school chaplain, as well as by Canon Alistair Lawson and Canon Hugh White, both former pupils of St Mary’s.
“I would like to sincerely express my thanks to the staff, past and present, as well as the parents and community of St Mary’s who helped to prepare the Mass and displays, as well as future events planned for the coming weeks,” continued Miss McKerral. “Their generosity of time and talent is greatly appreciated.”
Following Holy Mass, the guests viewed a display of photographs and historical artefacts then enjoyed lunch.
