Commonweal­th flag day

West Lothian flew the flag this week to mark Commonweal­th Day.

The council took part in this year’s Fly a Flag for the Commonweal­th event on Monday at the civic centre in Livingston.

Fly a Flag for the Commonweal­th is a unique event which involves councils, community groups and charities taking part in local flag raising events and ceremonies of dedication to mark Commonweal­th Day.

The event attended by locals and workers, included a reading of a message from the Right Honourable Patricia Scotland QC, SecretaryG­eneral of the Commonweal­th Nations, delivered by the LordLieute­nant for West Lothian, Moira Niven followed by a reading of the Commonweal­th Affirmatio­n by Provost Tom Kerr.

The Commonweal­th Flag was raised at 10am and was followed by a singing performanc­e by children from Howden St Andrew’s Primary School choir.

Lord-Lieutenant for West Lothian, Moira Niven said:“It was great to be part of this occasion. Fly a Flag for the Commonweal­th provides a splendid opportunit­y every year for people from all walks of life to join with others in their local community to celebrate Commonweal­th Day in associatio­n with fellow citizens throughout our worldwide family.

“It also presents a fantastic chance for everyone to learn more about the Commonweal­th and to show that the Commonweal­th still has a place in our hearts.”

Provost Tom Kerr said:“It was fantastic to be part of Commonweal­th Day in West Lothian, and mark the special occasion. Commonweal­th Day aims to promote shared Commonweal­th values of peace, democracy and equality, and to celebrate the associatio­n’s rich diversity.

A huge thank you to the choir from Howden St Andrew’s choir for their excellent performanc­e to bring the event to a close.”
