Call to tackle litter

- Marjorie Kerr

Environmental charity, Keep Scotland Beautiful, is calling on West Lothian residents to help remove litter from the area before it goes on to pollute Scotland’s rivers, seas and oceans.

Families across the country are trying to cut down on their plastic consumption to reduce the damage it causes to marine life.

However, with 80 per cent of marine litter coming from the land, Keep Scotland Beautiful and Greggs are calling for volunteers to take part in the Clean Up Scotland 2018 Spring Clean in April and May, to help transform the areas where they live and reduce the amount of litter that ends up in Scotland’s rivers, canals and lochs.

Carole Noble, operations director at Keep Scotland Beautiful said: “Blue Planet helped to open people’s eyes to how destructive litter is once it reaches our seas, rivers and oceans. With litter and flytipping at its worst level in 10 years, Keep Scotland Beautiful is calling for individuals, commu n i t y g roups, businesses and schools across the Lothians to help us to clean up Scotland as part of a national coordinated campaign.”Roger Whiteside, chief executive at Greggs said: “The Spring Clean is a fantastic campaign that not only makes a difference to our local communities but also encourages them to work together.”
