Getting an insight into careers in science

Special day for pupils

- Marjorie Kerr

Over 100 local secondary school pupils recently got an insight into careers in science, technology and engineering at an event held at West Lothian College.

The college, in partnership with DYWWest Lothian and ESP, held an interactive STEM event for second year pupils from across West Lothian to show how studying the subjects in the senior phase of school could provide them with skills they need in this area of industry.

Organisations including Tomorrow’s Engineers, DYW West Lothian, ESP and many others, aimed to inspire the engineers and scientists of the future.

The event provided practical experiences in STEM- related subjects for the pupils as they got to interact with a range of activities covering a wide range of topics such as health, engineering and archaeology.

A number of employers such a s Hi s t o r i c Environment Scotland and the Royal Air Force attended the event, speaking with pupils with the aim of allowing them to understand the range of STEM-related careers that are available to them.

Head of service, external engagement at West Lothian College, Colin Miller, said: “Holding events like this is important in demonstrating the wide range of careers available to school pupils through STEM.

“Thanks to all employers and college staff members for their enthusiasm and support in making this happen and we hope that the event has given the students something to consider as they proceed in their education.”
