Carers of West Lothian are now taking names for their annual Parents Transition Course, in May.

The course is aimed at parents/primary carers who support a young person aged 14+ who has additional support needs and is getting ready to leave school and move into adulthood.

Carers of West Lothian and Signpost will be working in partnership to host this event on May 3, 10, 17 and 24, from 9.30am to noon at Sycamore House, Quarrywood Court, Livingston.

Guest speakers will offer a wide range of support, advice and information on a wide range of key topics.

The course is designed to provide information which will help parents to plan ahead, understand the changes to service provision and how to adapt to these changes.

The course identifies who to approach and what choices might be available to young people.

A Whitburn Academy student stepped up to a challenge and won a top shoe design competition.

S3 pupil Rachel Mann picked up the top accolade at the Schuh Design Challenge 2018.

The runner- up was Morven Buchanan, from Linlithgow Academy, with Ellie Bromley from Bathgate Academy taking third place.

The competition was sponsored by the Livingston-based footwear company and organised by West Lothian Council’s Community Learning and Development Youth Services.

West Lothian Council’s head of education services, James Cameron commented: “The 21st year of the Schuh Design Challenge was a special event.

“The creativity and innovation of the young people was exceptional and congratulations to Rachel Mann from Whitburn Academy for her winning design.

“For over 20 years Schuh have sponsored this fantastic competition which showcases the creative talents of so many young people in West Lothian and we are grateful for their continued support.

“This is an excellent example of how West Lothian schools work with local employers to develop the skills for life, learning and work.”

Neil Blackburn, Schuh’s brand manager, added: “As with every year, the quality of work from the schools was fantastic.

“We love seeing the creativity and energy that the young people put into the shoes.

“This year’s winning shoe came from pupil Rachel Mann at Whitburn Academy, who took home the top prize of the Schuh trophy and a year’s supply of free shoes.

“The shoe was an intricate dragon design, full of colour and character.”
