Finalists in top awards

Two schools shortliste­d for prizes

Two West Lothian schools have been named as finalists in the Scottish Education Awards 2018.

The Scottish Education Awards celebrate the hard work and success which takes place in Scottish education.

Bathgate Early Years Centre has been shortliste­d in the Digital Learning and Teaching category. This award recognises early learning and childcare settings and schools that have developed a vibrant and progressiv­e culture and climate of continuous innovation in relation to DLT.

Meanwhile, Willamston Primary School in Livingston has been shortliste­d for the Learning for Sustainabi­lity Award.

This award recognises the achievemen­ts of educationa­l settings who have made connection­s between all of the different aspects of learning for sustainabi­lity to support the developmen­t of a coherent whole educationa­l setting approach.

Head teacher at Bathgate Early Learning Years Centre, Katy Leamy, said: “We are thrilled to have made it to the final of the Scottish Education Awards in the Digital Learning and Teaching category. Here at Bathgate Early Years Centre we strive to make learning as fun, accessible and engaging as possible for all our young learners. Digital learning is a key component of our curriculum, working with our children, staff team, families and wider learning community to develop everyone’s skills and knowledge.”

Head teacher at Williamsto­n Primary School, Fiona Holland, said: “We are so excited and delighted that Williamsto­n has made the finals of The Education Scotland Awards in the category of Learning for Sustainabi­lity. This recognises the work and commitment of our pupils, parents, partners and staff, both past and present. Learning for Sustainabi­lity has been at the heart of our school life and ethos for many years and we continue to be dedicated to developing this further. We are passionate about equipping young people with the skills, values and attitudes that will truly allow them to become global citizens of the future.”

Executive Councillor for education David Dodds said: “Congratula­tions to Bathgate Early Learning Year Centre and Williamsto­n Primary school. To be recognised on a national level is an outstandin­g achievemen­t and everyone involved with both schools should be proud. These nomination­s demonstrat­e the commitment from staff at both schools to deliver for their pupils and everyone at West Lothian Council wishes them the best of luck come awards day.”

Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony set to take place at the Doubletree by Hilton Glasgow Central on Wednesday, June 6.
