Teams on the Big Walk make a call

Walkers welcomed at communities in area

-

An epic journey across the UK to bring communities together landed in Livingston.

Launched by comedian Jo Brand, The Big Walk is a three-week adventure which will see four teams of walkers travelling to the four corners of the UK, along the way stopping in on the communities and projects that make great things happen.

On Friday, May 25, Team Scotland stopped at Craigshill Good Neighbour Network in Livingston where they heard and saw the difference being made to the lives of local people of all ages.

The walkers were also welcomed by children from Howden St Andrews Primary School, before having a go on the DJ decks with volunteers from the group.

The Big Walk is delivered by the Eden Project and made possible by the National Lottery.

Craigshill Good Neighbour Network provides practical help, social opportunities and volunteering opportunities to socially isolated people of all ages in Craigshill and south Howden.

Welcoming their visit Jane Dreary of Craigshill Good Neighbour Network, a National Lottery funded organization, said: “We’re so proud to host the walkers.

“Our visit from the Great Big Walk is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the work that we do here at Craigshill Good Neighbourhood Network with our volunteers and local partners.

“Skills sharing and making new connections helps everyone in our community to thrive.”

The Big Walk is an annual event visiting different projects and community groups while sharing an invitation to everyone to bring their own community together for The Big Lunch, the UK’s annual get-together for neighbours on June 3. Both events have been made possible by the National Lottery.

Angus McLeod, who set off from Morecambe on May 16 and will be walking for 18 days back to his hometown of Dundee, said he has been overwhelmed by the support of people and projects along the route.

He said: “It means the world to see such welcoming faces when we arrive at local projects.

“We’re excited about meeting the people at the heart of Craigshill Good Neighbour Network who feed this thriving community, and hope if more people come together for a Big Lunch on June 3, neighbourhoods right across the UK will feel the benefits too.”

Anyone can take part. Order a free pack and join millions of others across the UK for The Big Lunch on 3 June www.thebiglunch.com.
