SALLY’S MESSAGE IN BOTTLE IS FOUND
Courier hunt for holiday girl
A message in a bottle sent by West Lothian holidaymakers has been found almost 1000 miles away in a town in northern Norway four years later.
The bottled message from a person named Sally set sail from Kinghorn in Fife in 2014 and was only found on May 31 in the town of Laukvik in Lofoten, Norway, by June Grønseth.
Sally’s note inside the bottle asked whoever found the message to contact The Courier, which June kindly did.
The message said: “Dear Someone. We’re on holiday at Kinghorn. We sent you this message in a bottle on August 15, 2014. If you find it could you contact the West Lothian Courier, Scotland.
“We hope that the newspaper will print your message out on their Thursday edition so we can find out how far this has travelled and how long it has taken. Thank you, Sally.”
June, a volunteer beach cleaner, found the bottle in the town of Laukvik, which sits inside the arctic circle, and is around 980 miles from Kinghorn and 996 miles from West Lothian.
She said: “I found it in Laukvik, Lofoten, Norway. This is above the Arctic Circle so it’s a long travel for the mail.
“And as you can see from the letter, the sender wanted me to contact you to tell about the finding.
“I’m a volunteer beach cleaner and since 2012 I’ve been fighting the plastic pollution that kills so many of our seabirds, whales and fishes.
“Almost every day I go out to clean beaches where I live in the Lofoten area in the northern part of Norway.
“I have also written articles in World Policy Magazine about plastic pollution, and also several articles are written about me and my engagement to clean up our environment and oceans.
“I found this bottle, a 500 millilitre Pepsi Cola, last week together with three cubic metres of other plastic.”
With June fulfilling her part of the deal and contacting The Courier the search is now on to find Sally.
