Businesses attended an event to celebrate the Year of Young People and help prepare young people for the world of work.

Fifty employers attended the Big Business Breakfast at Howden Park Centre, Livingston, along with school staff and students. The aim was to celebrate schoolemployer engagement activities in the area and strengthen Developing the Young Workforce (DYW) projects in West Lothian secondary schools. Attendees heard presentations including; Developing The Young Workforce, The Supported Employment Service and the Career Ready Programme.

And young people spoke about their experiences in schools, including Work Placements, The Career Ready Programme and the West Lothian Council MultiTrades Programme.

Attendees also enjoyed networking opportunities which included time to meet school staff and students.

Employers who’d supported school DYW activities in session 2017- 18 were celebrated and Livingston Designer Outlet, AK Stoddart, Schuh, Clicknetherfield and Sky received awards in recognition of their support. West Lothian Council, head of education, James Cameron said: “We’d like to thank all the businesses, students and education professionals who attended the event and allowed it to be such a successful morning. The feedback received from employers on the morning was exceptional as many employers were eager to strengthen their existing support to schools, or offer new support.

“We hope to offer similar events for our young people to engage with employers in the near future as we remain committed to delivering a clear career development path for pupils in West Lothian.”
