Ten years on … Bathgate mark cup win
Bathgate Old Boys tackle New Boys
Bathgate Thistle celebrated the finest achievement in the club’s history with a special challenge match featuring the 2008 Scottish Junior Cup -winning team.
The 10th Anniversary Challenge Match at the club’s Creamery Park saw the 2008 side take on the current Thistle side –with the old boys on the end of a 3-1 defeat.
The family of the late Paul McGrillen – who netted the decisive goal in the famous 2-1 victory over Cumnock at Rugby Park 10 years ago – were on hand to present the trophy and medals, while his son Josh netted the only goal for the legends and has been invited to pre-season training.
Club secretary Bobby Napier hailed the event, saying: “It was the first time that a lot of the guys had been back at the club or met up with each other since the cup final so it was a special day.
“It was great for the club to recognise the team who really contributed towards the biggest achievement in our history.
“It was amazing to see just how easily they all got along with each other again.
“Paul McGrillen’s family were there as club guests and presented everyone with their medals.
“Andy Carlin, the keeper of the 2008 team was named man of the match, too, and Paul’s son Josh got a goal.
“It was a tremendous day for everyone involved and some of the old guys gave as good as they got. Even if the legs maybe aren’t there anymore they certainly hadn’t lost their desire and footballing brains.
“Willie Wilson was his typical self, throwing himself in at every tackle and moaning at the ref, but we all had a good laugh and catch-up after the game.”
Thistle head coach Mikey Wilson said: “It was a great occasion and nice for some of the guys here to see what can happen if they become club legends – that folk still love them 10 years later.
“It’s important that clubs recognise their past achievements and this team were the pinnacle for Bathgate.
“It was a very good run out for my boys and I’m maybe thinking of offering some of the 2008 team a contract because they showed they can still play!”
