Help us recognise the best among our young people

- Debbie Hall

Do you know a young person who deserves recognition for their work and commitment to making their community a better place?

The Courier and The Centre, Livingston have teamed up to mark national Year of the Young People to by awarding local youths with a well-earned prize.

The Young Local Hero Awards aim to recognise those who have made a difference in their communities, schools, clubs or even at home.

And we’re putting out a call for readers to nominate someone they believe is worthy of an award.

The Year of the Young People campaign celebrates the personalities, talents and achievements of our nation’s young people through various channels including culture, sport and education.

We want to shine a spotlight on young people who go the extra mile to help others. This could include anything from volunteering in a community group, fundraising or caring for their siblings to perhaps even someone who has excelled at school or a sports club.

For all their hard work we’d like to recognise and reward them with a special certificate and £100 gift card that can be spent in The Centre, Livingston.

Our Young Local Hero Awards follows on from the success of the community-wide Local Hero Awards, set up in the summer of 2016 where around 20 people including Alison Barr, founder of Team Jak Foundation, were officially recognised and rewarded for their efforts helping people in the community.

Ashley Bisland, deputy centre director at The Centre, said: “This year seemed liked the perfect year to focus on recognising and rewarding our youngsters in the community who have done something kind, inspiring and commendable.

“We are really looking forward to receiving the nominations and rewarding a young local hero every month and presenting them with a special certificate and £100 Gift Card for their efforts.”

Courier editor Marjorie Kerr added: “There are so many young people out there making a real difference in the communities and to people’s lives and we want to reward these unsung heroes for their hard work, dedication and good deeds.”
