Five compete at new circuit

-

Five riders from West Lothian Clarion’s youth section competed in the Scottish Circuit Race Championships and supporting races at the new Fife Cycle Circuit at Lochgelly.

Rhuairdh Fulton was up first in the under-8 race and took an early lead, however his exertions in a mountain biking race the previous day ultimately told in his legs and he was gradually pegged back. Despite that, he was able to finish in a credible fourth place.

The club’s next representative was Katie Galloway, who put in a battling ride in a field of mainly older and more experienced riders despite fighting illness.

Katie has recently had success in this type of racing, winning the under-14 category in the Hart’s Cyclery Crit Series, which consisted of four races split between the Lochgelly Circuit and Ingliston.

A trio of riders took part in the under-16 event with Alex Ball, George Freeman and Max Guthrie tackling the course.

Their race plan was to keep high in the bunch, not to do too much work and to follow the breaks. It was Max’s first race for a while and he looked good in the wheels and showed he has the talent to compete in such races.

George and Alex held their position well with the latter looking strong and attentive at the front, sliding into a shortlived break and closing down another.

He managed to stick in the pack during the action-packed last five laps and came home in ninth place in the gallop.

George and Max finished further back in the field.
