Pupil’s design was a cracker

Art to go on firework event poster

- Marjorie Kerr

A West Lothian girl is set to see her artwork all over Edinburgh this summer.

Knightsridge Primary School pupil Harriette Williamson (10) is one of three youngsters who won a contest to design posters for the Virgin Money Fireworks Concert.

The entries from Harriette and Charlotte Pratt, from Bruntsfield Primary School, and Jordan Porphyre, from Roseburn Primary School, were praised by the judges for their creativity, innovation and spirit, themes which make up the atmosphere of the annual Fireworks Concert – the grand finale of the Edinburgh International Festival on Monday, August 27.

The competition, supported by Virgin Money and Forth 1, is now in its seventh year and attracted hundreds of entries from children across Edinburgh, the Lothians and Fife.

The winners were announced in a special unveiling at the Virgin Money Lounge, Edinburgh. Forth 1 DJs Boogie and Arlene, alongside producer Marty, judged the entries on their bold use of materials, their bright colours and eye- catching designs.

As well as seeing their posters throughout the city, the winners will enjoy an exclusive behind-thescenes tour of the fireworks set-up site at Edinburgh Castle and will win a family ticket to the spectacular concert in Princes Street Gardens on the eve of the fireworks display.

Andrew Nicholson, Virgin Money brand director, said: “Each year I am amazed at the creativity shown by the school children who enter the poster competition. It was extremely hard to pick just three winners from such a high-quality shortlist. It was a pleasure to welcome the finalists and their families to the Virgin Money Lounge in Edinburgh to declare the winning designs. Harriette, Charlotte and Jordan all created magnificent designs and we’re thrilled that their artistic flair will now be shown off throughout Edinburgh during August.”

Fergus Linehan, Edinburgh International Festival director said: “Thank you to all of the wonderful artists who entered our poster competition, and to each of our partners for their integral involvement in helping to reach more entrants than ever before. It is great to see so many budding designers from across Edinburgh, the Lothians and Fife, and we are delighted that they will enjoy the popular Fireworks Concert, which will once again provide an extraordinary finale to the city’s summer festival season. Events like these – and the Poster Competition – give many more young people the opportunity to play their part in this spectacular event. We are delighted to continue engaging with young people, and I look forward to seeing where their creativity takes them.”

The fireworks display will be accompanied by orchestral classics from the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. Gavin Reid, chief executive of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra said: “Thank you to all the very creative and imaginative young designers who took part in our competition this year, and well done Harriette, Charlotte and Jordan.”
