Low in top gear to race off with win Ladies teams lose out in weekend action

-

Several West Lothian riders were in action at the Cowdenbeath Racewall stock car meeting on Saturday night.

The weather was dull and cloudy for most of the time, although a short heavy drizzle towards the end of the meeting made life difficult – especially for the 1300 Saloon drivers who struggled to find grip.

However, Peter Low managed to do so better than the rest and romped away to an easy win.

Tommy Walls (East Calder) picked up a fifth in heat one but then a brush with the wall in heat two saw him have to retire from the meeting.

When the Classic Hot Rods took to the track they lined up in their grid observing a minute’s silence in memory of Dougie Farrer, one of the hot rod drivers of the 70s and 80s who recently passed away.

There was controversy at the end of the Classic Hot Rod final when Keith Chesher was disqualified for a technical infringement thus handing the win to Jock Campbell (Kirkliston).

Linlithgow’s Brett Sneddon picked up a third and a fourth in his heats only to get tangled with another car during the final and forced to retire.

When the leading duo in the BriSCA Formula II final tangled, Robbie Dawson capitalised on the situation to go through to win.

D a n i e l S c r imgeour (Broxburn) had another strong outing in his car and if he had a bit of luck on his side, would have won heat two.

As it was he had to relinquish the lead on the last lap and settle for second.

Earlier, Scrimgeour had finished ninth in the opening heat then went on to finish in seventh in the final and fourth in the Grand National.

The Mi n i s t ox were dominated by Mika Millar who won all three races and picked up the Turner trophy in the process.

Local drivers in action included Armadale’s Taylor and Ryan Borthwick.

Taylor picked up a ninth in heat one after being spun and a fourth in the final.

Ryan finished 10th in both heat one and the final.

Freya Lovett managed to roll her Micro F2 in one of the heats but undeterred was back out for her next race, while there was a warm welcome to Aaron Terpstra who brought his car over from the Netherlands to race.

Owen Marshall (Blackridge) and Bobbie Brandon (Fauldhouse) were in action, with Marshall fourth in the first race and Brandon ninth in the last.

Saturday night sees the annual visit from the Heritage F2 Stock Cars with their Scottish Championship up for grabs.

The Hot Saloons will make their first visit from Crimond Raceway, while the BriSCA F2 Stock Cars, Saloon Stock Cars and National Hot Rods will be racing for their Turner Trophies. Two out of West Lothian’s three ladies’sides were in action at the weekend, each falling to sharply contrasting defeats, writes Peter Stewart.

Blackburn United travelled to face Hibernian 23s in what was always going to be a taxing encounter for the away side. With Hibs racing into a 2-0 lead, Teri-louise Deegan provided hope when she pulled one back for Blackburn.

But it was to be little more than a glimmer of hope and Blackburn faced a four-goal deficit by half-time.

Scotland starlet Kirsty Morrison helped herself to a hat-trick as the SWFL 1 South leaders completed a thumping 10-1 win. Blackburn remain 10 points clear of the relegation zone, but face another stern test with the visit of Cumbernauld Colts to New Murrayfield on Sunday.

Broxburn Athletic Colts will perhaps feel far more aggrieved to miss out on all three points away to West Park United.

The trip to Bishopbriggs started well for Broxburn, who found themselves two up at half-time thanks to goals from Jade Duffy and Louise Davidson, but ultimately suffered a 4-3 defeat.

Broxburn welcome West Lothian rivals Murieston United, with both sides battling it out in the middle of the SWFL 2 Central.

The game kicks off at Broxburn’s Albyn Park at 1pm.
