Perfect day for Richie and the Monarchs

Worrall and Co see off the Sheffield Tigers

- Callum Carson

Edinburgh Staggs Bar Monarchs continued their brilliant home form with a convincing 54- 36 victory over the Sheffield Tigers on Friday night.

Richie Worrall put in a stunning display as he is yet to drop a point at Armadale in his four home appearances since signing for the club.

The heat leaders dominated once again for the hosts, although Worrall was the only perfect rider.

His first corner work could not be bettered no matter what gate he was coming from.

Captain Erik Riss won his first four heats, starting out with a win from the back against Tigers captain Kyle Howarth in an excellent heat four.

The German ace narrowly missed out on a maximum with a third place finish in the final heat.

Ricky Wells spilled just one point during his four rides with a 9+2 tally on the evening, while bike problems cost Josh Pickering a couple of third places and left him on 4+2.

New arrival William Lawson was certainly not embarrassed on his return to the sport after eight years out of action, with 2+1 from four rides and plenty of positives signs for the future.

He beat National League man Joe Lawlor and Mason Compton in a decent start to the Perth man’s latest stint with the Monarchs.

A delighted Worrall said: “I always came here and scored well, but maybe dropped a point to Ricky and Erik. Now I don’t have to race against them! The track was a little slick but someone must have been looking after me, but I had intended to use a stronger engine.”

Top scoring visitor was Kasper Andersen with 13 points.

He said: “I had heard that Edinburgh is a hard track to ride so I just came here to enjoy it, but the track suited me pretty well so I am happy. It reminds me a lot of my home track in Denmark.”

A home 5- 1 in the opening heat thanks to Wells and Victor Palovaara put the Monarchs in the driving seat from the start of the contest and they never looked back as they extended their lead to 27-15 after heat seven. The victory makes it six home wins on the bounce for the Armadale club as they continue their charge up the table following a slow start to the campaign.

They sit in sixth place, just four points behind Scottish rivals the Glasgow Tigers who are currently occupying the fourth and final playoff berth.
