Headshave for cancer charity

- Sean O’Neil

A West Lothian mum has raised over £1200 for cancer awareness along with her daughter’s school after their family was touched by the disease.

Louise Corson held a fundraiser a Dedridge Primary School in Livingston to help raise money for chancer charities after her sister was diagnosed with breast cancer six years ago.

Her sister thankfully made a full recovery but Louise still wanted to raise money for cancer awareness and underwent a brave the shave for Breast Cancer Care while the kids participated in a Race for Life for Cancer Research UK.

Louise said: “I wanted to do this as six years ago my sister was diagnosed with breast cancer - she thankfully has recovered - so it is something close to my heart.

“Losing the hair on your head is the least of what cancer patients go through, however, as they also lose their eyelashes, eyebrows and hair all over their bodies.

“The hair also takes a long longer to grow back than getting your head shaved. They probably also lose a lot of self confidence and self-esteem as part of this along with all the other physical and mental symptoms they have with treatment.

“So although what I did is nothing close to what the patients go through it was something I wanted to do to show support to them and the charity.

“Many people have called me brave for doing this but I’m not the brave one. The people fighting or who have fought cancer are the brave ones.”

Alongside Louise getting her head and eyebrows shaved for charity the school pupils did laps of the playground according to which primary class they were in and for this the school raised £403.

They also had a dress down day in which they raised £53.

A fundraising coffee morning was also held that same morning at the school, organised by Louise and the schoo’s parent council

As well as refreshments they also had a book stall, a tombola and a raffle.

On the Wednesday before the coffee morning, Scott Rodgers who works at the school, along with another male member of staff got their legs waxed as part of the fundraising.

The total amount raised from the coffee morning, head shave and the leg waxing is currently sitting at over £1200.
