Whitburn keep up good form

- Whitburn ................ 3 Tayport ................... 2

Martin Russell’s last-minute goal made it five wins on the bounce for Whitburn as they climbed into fourth place in the East Superleague table.

It was a spirited effort from the Burnie who went into the fixture missing three strikers but they went on to create numerous chances.

They opened the scoring midway through the first half when Greg Nicol was fed through by Reece Duncan before firing beyond Gavin Sorley.

Both Russell and Darren Liddell went close to extending the home side’s advantage but it was Tayport who would get the game’s next goal when they were awarded a penalty, which Dayle Robertson slotted home to ensure it was honours even at the break.

Burnie controlled the early stages of the second half with Russell, Reece Boyle and John-James Henderson all squandering chances as it looked as if it was going to be one of those days for the hosts.

After playing terrific football, the second goal actually arrived through route one with Liddell rushing on to the long ball before sweeping home.

He looked to have wrapped up the points on 82 minutes, only to see his effort spectacularly cleared off the line by Grant Paterson.

Tayport promptly went up the other end and netted an equaliser for the second time when Jamie Gill was on hand to head home at the back post.

Whitburn, though, have proven to be late-goal specialists this term and Saturday was no different as they got the three points their play deserved when Russell was the quickest to react to a loose ball inside the box to prod the ball into the net for the winner.
