Colts edged out at home

- Peter Stewart

Broxburn Athletic Colts fell to a 3- 1 defeat against Cumbernauld Colts Yellows at Albyn Park, but gave a spirited performance and deserved a well-taken goal.

Goalkeeper Shannon Girvan was outstanding, and was soon forced into her first save of the day after Iona Guild was beaten oneon-one.

The visitors then struck twice in quick succession, the first a crisp strike from the edge of the area after skilful play on the flank with the same two forwards combining for the second on 24 minutes, the delivery just out of Girvan’s reach.

On the half-hour, Louise Davidson nearly pulled one back, shooting straight at the keeper after determined play from Danielle Bennett, then substitute Elaine Waugh had a close-range effort cleared off the line after a dangerous Jade Duffy free-kick.

Just as Broxburn appeared back in the tie, the third came for Cumbernauld on the stroke of half-time.

The home side weren’t disheartened and played with the same verve in the second period. On the hour mark, Davidson showed strength to turn and crack a strike off the crossbar.

She then got her reward later in the contest – calmly rounding the keeper, before slotting home.

This Sunday sees their penultimate SWFL 2 Central fixture with a trip south to take on Hawick United.

Elsewhere, Murieston United’s poor run of form continued with a 2-0 defeat at home to Hawick United.

Their final two SWFL 2 Central fixtures are far from easy, with Glasgow Girls Development and Airdrie standing in the way of a positive end to their season.

Blackburn United’s SWFL 1 South campaign also draws to a close with a difficult tie, away to Thistle Weir, but they go west on the back of a 2-0 win at Morton after strikes from Kelly Mochan and Nicole Norris.
