The Winchburgh Warriors are celebrating after they were crowned Netball Scotland’s Bounce Back to Netball Club of the Year.

The club, who more than doubled their members over the last 12 months, finished top in a public vote to win the award.

The self-funded club, who are based at Winchburgh Primary School, started in January 2017 and have continued to grow ever since, with 47 players currently registered.

Successes this year include achieving Netball Scotland’s bronze award as well as raising £ 2000 for Cancer Research UK, and the club are hoping to host their own festival in March 2019.

The focus of Netball Scotland’s Bounce Back to Netball programme is on creating fun and social opportunities for all, with the Warriors taking part in several competitions across Scotland.

Coach Michelle Jempson says she’s delighted the club has been recognised and hopes it can grow from strength to strength.

She told the Courier: “It’s a fantastic achievement and the girls are all thrilled to have won the award.

“We started with 19 members at the start of the year and now have close to 50 so we’re constantly growing.

“Most of the players are local from Winchburgh or nearby towns and villages and keeping it local is something we were really keen to do.”

She added: “It’s a great community club and netball is a sport that’s really getting more and more popular so we’re finding more people are keen to give it a try.

“There’s a great social aspect to the club because although we’re largely all from the area, a lot of us didn’t know each other before the club started and now we’re all pals.

“It provides a great opportunity to meet new people.” .
