Late goal sends Burnie top

-

Whitburn climbed to the top of the East Region Superleague table thanks to an 88th minute winner from Grant Hamilton as they nabbed a 2-1 away win against Tayport.

The game certainly wasn’t a thing of beauty thanks to the constant strong winds and a lack of match sharpness as both teams had fallen victim to postponements in recent weeks.

The opening phases saw little action before the Port began to take control of the game and took the lead on the half hour as Josh Chalmers fired home a Chris Liversedge cross.

Lewis Payne should have put his side two goals in front 10 minutes later but a tremendous challenge from Hamilton cleared the danger.

The home side would rue that missed opportunity within three minutes as the Burnie levelled things up before the break when Greg Gunn played through Darren Liddell, who duly smashed the ball beyond the helpless Jack Shaw in the home goal.

Despite the swing in momentum, Jason Bolam’s side were unable to build on that as Tayport created the best chances with Dayle Robertson’s effort clipping the woodwork.

Having weathered that storm, it was the visitors who went through the gears in the closing stages. Gary Brass headed a Gunn cross narrowly over the bar with 15 minutes left, before the captain again went close as he shot over after neat play.

With two minutes left, the pressure counted as Seb Tinning’s corner ricocheted in and around the six yard box before Hamilton poked the ball over the line for the winner to send his side top of the table.
