GOOD CUP RUN CAN SET US UP FOR THE SEASON

Boss asks players for quick start

Livingston boss Gary Holt has targeted Betfred Cup success as he prepares to get the season underway on Saturday.

The Lions’ 2019/20 season starts with a visit to League One side Falkirk before hosting Championsh­ip outfit Ayr United on Tuesday night – and Holt insists the club must get out of the group stages.

The former Scotland midfielder told the Courier: “It’s on to the proper stuff and it’s games that matter now. You’re back into it straight away and we’re wanting a cup run.

“We want to start the season off on good footing so we can hit the ground running come August and the start of the league campaign. We don’t want to be heading into the Motherwell game (August 3) still trying to find form.”

And the gaffer says nobody at the club will be taking the games lightly, adding: “We don’t see them as glorified friendlies at all. We want to go on a cup run, it’s as simple as that.

“It’s an opportunit­y for the club to bring in more money and prestige if we go on a run in this competitio­n. Being honest, are we going to win the league? You’d have to say it’s very unlikely but we’ve got cups that we can try and win so let’s go out there and give it a right good go and see where it takes us.”

Holt was given his managerial bow at The Bairns where he was in the hotseat for 14 months from April 2013 before becoming the assistant boss at Norwich City.
