Stage kids’ cash plea to avoid final curtain

-

A much- loved youth theatre group is launching a funding appeal after its council grant was cut in half.

Firefly runs theatre, film, music, dance, creative writing and technical skills workshops for children across West Lothian, working with up to 300 kids every week.

But a shortfall in funding has led to the cancellation of shows and workshops and the group has been forced to launch a crowdfunder appeal to ensure it can deliver its winter show.

A spokesperson said: “Young film and theatre- makers of all ages met at Howden Park Centre recently, tasked with creating a short film for Firefly Arts’ autumn crowdfunder campaign and to highlight the impact that Firefly’s youth arts programming has had in their lives.

“This talented and resourceful group of graduates, students, past and current participants are cracking examples of the positive impact of quality arts experience on young lives.

“Firefly is committed to providing quality and inclusive arts for all and aims to build confidence, develop social, creative and technical skills, enhance curricular learning, and engage effectively with young people who struggle in more formal learning environments.”

The spokesperson added: “Following a 50 per cent cut in its council grant, our upcoming crowdfunder campaign aims to raise funds for this year’s winter show project and is just one of the ways in which we are trying to rescue some much-loved and nationally acclaimed youth arts programming.”

Daniel Brown from Blackburn said: “I came to Firefly at a crucial point in my life, when I was discovering who I was and trying to find the person I wanted to be. Along with drama and performance skills I grew immensely in confidence, communication and collaboration.

“There is a real lack of accessibility to the arts in West Lothian and Firefly made this possible for me and countless others.

“Firefly continued to support me after school, and helped me to prepare my audition for The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, where I study now.

“Without Firefly I wouldn’t be where I am today.”

Fi re f l y ’ s crowdfunding campaign will go live on Wednesday, August 28, at www. crowdfunder.co.uk/fireflyarts.
