Sharp drop in teenage births

a young person’s education and job opportunities resulting in low incomes. “Nonetheless, it remains imperative that young people who do have children of their own receive all the support they need.”

Linlithgow MSP Fiona Hyslop, said: “While the drop in teenage pregnancies – if these pregnancies are occurring in young women under 15 – is a positive step in the right direction, it is important that we do not attach any stigma to young mothers and that we ensure that all new mums are supported and that all newborns are given the best possible start in life.

“It is clear that improved health and wellbeing education in schools is working. Unwanted teenage pregnancies can result in serious problems for both mothers and children so this significant downturn in figures in the last 13 years is welcome.”

Lothian MSP Miles Briggs agreed, saying: “The drop in the number of teenage pregnancies, particularly for under-16s, is a welcome trend and one that I would like to see continue.

“Having good public information campaigns in schools and in communities plays an important role in educating girls and boys on safe sex. A change in culture to young people having kids when they are a bit older and better established for raising a family is a positive progression.”

And Neil Findlay MSP said: “This is very good news. I hope this is evidence that all the good work being done in schools and colleges to educate young people about relationships and their health and wellbeing is paying off.”
