Brox cup glory bid

Skipper Nick hoping for biggest of fanfares

- CALLUM CARSON

Broxburn Athletic captain Nick Locke has called on the town to get behind the team as they look to clinch a place in the third round of the Scottish Cup on Saturday.

The Brox host SPFL League Two side Cowdenbeath in a second round replay after Locke netted a dramatic late equaliser in front of a large and vocal away support in Fife last weekend.

And with Albyn Park preparing to host arguably the biggest game in the club’s history, the skipper wants the local community to turn out in their droves for the big day.

He said: “The crowd was absolutely unbelievable. It was the best thing about my experience at Broxburn. They never stopped singing for the 90 minutes and it seemed like the whole town were there.

“Hopefully they can all turn out again on Saturday and sing like that again because it was incredible.

“It would be amazing to have as large a support as possible from the town.”

The midfielder believes the East of Scotland Premier League side have what it takes to progress and book an away date against Highland League side Inverurie Loco Works in the third round.

He said: “We’ve got a good chance because we did match them.

“We were the better team to be honest, definitely in the first half.

“I’m actually disappointed we didn’t win although the way we came back to get the draw is brilliant.

“We’ve got a great team, a great bunch of boys. There’s no doubt that a lot of the guys could play at a higher level but we have all stuck together after last season.

“It was disappointing when we went a goal down but we all knew that we could come back.

“We’ve shown throughout the season that we’re capable of fighting back and playing some good football.”

Boss Brian McNaughton added: “We’ve got them at home but it’s not going to be a different game.

“They’re still Cowdenbeath and they’re still second top in League Two. They’ve got some really good players and will be the favourites.

“I just hope we can go out there and perform at that level again.

“We’ll train exactly the same way, just like we always do, we’ll be prepared for them again and give it our best shot.

“Hopefully there will be a great crowd on Saturday. We had a brilliant crowd in the last round against East Stirling but this is one step further.

“The fans were magnificent and we want them to turn up again this weekend.”
