“A lot of the young people felt really passionately about trying to support those who found themselves living without shelter.

“We talked a lot about Social Bite and their efforts to raise awareness and their plans to end homelessness and it was something they all felt like they could get involved in to play their part in making a difference.”

Erin Black was one of the many pupils who took part.

She said: “The reason I wanted to take part in the big sleep out was because I wanted to be a part of raising awareness for the millions of people that sleep rough every night.

“I felt that since I was old enough donating money wasn’t going to cut it. “I wanted an active part in the change. “The conditions we faced were not easy and a challenge for many, however nothing compared to what others go through.

“Regardless to the rain and cold temperatures everyone kept in good spirits as we all remembered why we were doing it.

“The night was fun and a memory I won’t forget, as everyone came together as a community.

“Doing the big sleep out will definitely change my outlook on life, I am forever grateful to have a roof done over my head and will not take it for granted again.”

St Margaret’s Academy head teacher, Greg McDowall, said he was proud of everyone from the school who had taken part.

He added: “I’d like to commend our staff for organising this event and our pupils for embracing the difficult conditions for such a good cause.

“The amount of money they have raised so far is simply fantastic and they have managed to do this while hopefully learning an important lesson about the situation many people in Scotland are experiencing on a daily basis.”
