Almond Valley’s new historic exhibition
Almond Valley Heritage Trust has unveiled a unique new display in the Museum of the Scottish Shale Oil Industry.
The nationally- significant collection welcomed a rare exhibition on paraffin heaters in time for the arrival of Almond Valley’s new after-hours event, The Winter Realm of the Paraffin Pixies.
The heritage centre in Livingston is home to the Scottish Museum of the Scottish Shale Oil Industry which has a remarkable and important history within West Lothian.
The collection within the museum began with a research project established in the 1980s and has grown throughout the years with unusual objects and archives associated with the shale industry.
The objects within the fascinating collection are now displayed in the museum which aims to protect and preserve the unique history of West Lothian.
The display will feature paraffin heaters from the 20th century which were used in homes throughout West Lothian and beyond and include objects from well-known manufacturers of paraffin powered appliances such as Valor and Aladdin.
It will also feature other products associated with the 1920s heaters such as wicks, flame spreaders and a wick cleaner which would have been used daily by household’s throughout West Lothian.
Amy Muir, exhibition and interpretations officer at Almond Valley Heritage Trust said: “We are really excited to launch our new paraffin heater display as part of our yearly programme of educational activities and events in the museum.
“The display will take a look back at the heaters and products that were used nearly 100 years ago to provide heat and warmth to homes around the country. We hope the display will offer a different insight into West Lothian’s unique heritage and encourage visitors to connect with their local history.”
The new display is part of a yearly educational programme run by the Museum of the Scottish Shale Oil Industry which aims to preserve and create an engaging space where visitors can learn about the fascinating history of West Lothian.
