I’m so lucky to be alive

Josh on the mend after US crash

A cyclist who went on a round- the- world ride for charity says he is “lucky to be alive” after being hit by a car in America.

Josh Quigley (27) from Livingston was struck by a vehicle in Temple, Texas before Christmas.

He took to social media to tell followers he had suffered a broken heel bone, pelvis and ribs along with a fractured skull and a punctured lung.

But on December 30 he said he was recovering well following the accident on December 21, adding “what a difference a week makes”.

He said he would be discharged shortly but would not be fit to fly for six weeks so would spend six weeks in Austin, Texas, recovering.

Josh was inspired to take up cycling after seeing Sir Chris Hoy speaking at an event in Edinburgh.

He embarked on his world cycle effort in April and was 2000 miles short of his 18,000 target when he was hit.

Josh posted on Facebook: “I just need it to be known how grateful I am.

“Since my accident I have received so much love, help and support from so many people around the world.

“I’m grateful firstly to all of the medical staff who have been looking after me in hospital for the past week.

“I am grateful to the doctors and the consultants who take so much time to explain things to me and make sure I understand what we are doing.

“To the surgeons for the procedures I have had and especially grateful to the nurses who are giving me 24 hour round the clock care, to the many many people of Texas who are constantly visiting me and bringing gifts, necessities and some good ol’ Texas love and humour.

“I am grateful to the many British expats who visit me and bring gifts, food, necessities and some good ol’ British and Scottish love and humour, to the thousands of people who have left comments and messages and I am of course very grateful to my many friends and family who have been constantly checking up on me and making sure I am OK.

“I am truly truly grateful for all of the love I have received recently and as I sit hear in tears writing this comment I can honestly say this has been one of the best experiences of my life.”
