?? > Picture shows Fair Trade Group representatives Jean Overton, John Scholes and Carrie Byrne making ?? Linlithgow and District 41 Club’s February meeting, held in Linlithgow Golf Club, took the format of a presentation by a delegation from the local Fair Trade Group whose basic aim is to help make the World a fairer place for all to live in. Historically, big companies in richer countries have exploited poor farmers and workers in third world countries in order to increase their profits. Fair Trade aims to get fairer returns to growers and encourages everyone to purchase Fair Trade products, even though they may cost a little more. There is a wide range of products available, ranging from basics like tea and coffee, through rubber gloves and footballs and you can even buy Fair Trade gold! Another initiative put forward by the group was the ethical investment organisation ‘Shared Interest’, which offers loans and credit facilities to poorer farmers and also helps community projects in these deprived areas. An account can be opened with ‘Shared Interest’ for as little as £100:00 and works just like a regular bank account. 41 Club Chairman, Martin Burns, thanked the group for their informative and interesting presentation and the evening was rounded off with a lovely meal.
