HARRIS IS WHEEL DEAL

-

A caring youngster is helping children less fortunate than himself by getting on his bike for charity.

Four-year-old Harris Gallacher from East Calder has only recently learned to cycle and is using his new skill to raise money during the coronavirus crisis.

He had asked his mum and dad how he could help others, so he is now cycling 100 miles over 30 days to raise funds for Radio Forth’s Cash for Kids.

His mum Lorraine said:“He just asked that we do something to help other boys and girls who don’t have as much as he does.”

A four-year-old boy has been cycling to raise money for vulnerable children.

Harris Gallacher, from East Calder, has only recently started cycling and is using his new found skill to raise money during the coronavirus crisis.

After he expressed an interest in doing something to help others, his parents came up with the idea to set him a challenge of cycling 100 miles in 30 days.

Alongside his mum and dad, Lorraine and Stephen, Harris has been going out every evening and racking up the miles to get to his target distance.

Lorraine explained:“His dad works as a nurse in Accident and Emergency so it can be tricky to take him out on his bike.

“We also have a six-month-old boy, Finn, so a bike along with the pram doesn’t really work.

“We alternate and Harris gets out every day and he has been cycling four to seven miles a night.”

The family decided to raise cash for a local cause – Radio Forth’s Cash for Kids initiative – because Harris had requested that they do something to help other children.

He is due to start school this year at St Paul’s Primary and the challenge is also helping the four-year-old to burn off energy and get through the pandemic.

Lorraine said:“Harris had just started cycling after getting a new bike in December so is always wanting out anyway.

“We were looking at doing something during his daily exercise to bring a wee bit of structure to his day at the moment and get Harris outside, so this just seemed like the best idea.

“He had asked that we do something to help other boys and girls who don’t have as much as he does.”

Harris began his challenge on April 13 and has gradually been increasing the distance he is cycling each day.
