Lewis says parents did not like his smash hit

- DEBBIE HALL

West Lothian chart topper Lewis Capaldi has revealed how his parents told him to ditch his breakthrough hit.

Lewis, who still lives with his mum Carol and dad Mark in Whitburn, plays all of his new music to them before releasing it.

But he has revealed how they didn’t rate his most successful hit ‘Someone You Loved’, which spent a record number of weeks in the top 10 charts.

Lewis said: “My mum can’t really hide her disdain for something if she doesn’t like it.

“I can tell by looking at her face if she doesn’t like it and if it’s good my dad will always go,‘I have goosebumps’.

“But cut back maybe a year-and-a-half ago and I played them two songs. One was a piano ballad and one was a summer song, it was a bit more upbeat.

“They said: ‘The upbeat one is really good, the piano ballad we are not really into’. That piano ballad ended up being‘ Someone You Loved’.”

He added: “So now every time they tell me a song is bad I’m like‘well it looks like it’s going to make me a lot of money’.”

The star also revealed that fans will be able to bid for his leopard-print jacket and backstage passes for his next UK tour, including a meet-andgreet opportunity as he raises money for the Scottish Refugee Council.

He said: “I’m really happy to be able to support Scottish Refugee Council and all the work they do helping refugees rebuild their lives in Scotland.

“We are hoping the items attract plenty of attention and raise lots of money.”

Louise McGovern from Scottish Refugee Council said:“We are delighted to work with Lewis on this fundraiser. His support has been amazing, and we know his huge fan base will be thrilled to be in with a chance to meet him at a UK gig .”
