West Lothian sees a continued rise in exams success

The number of West Lothian pupils achieving Higher level or equivalent qualificat­ions continued to rise for a record eighth year.

A recent report to the council’s Education Executive showed that performanc­e of S5 and S6 pupils at Scottish Credit and Qualificat­ions Framework (SCQF) Level 6, which includes Highers and equivalent qualificat­ions has risen considerab­ly in the last five years.

Those achieving five or more awards at Higher level rose by two percentage point this year to 43 per cent, and those with three or more awards rising by two percentage points to 60 per cent.

Numbers achieving at least one

Higher level qualificat­ion rose by four percentage points to 75 per cent.

In the last five years, those achieving at least five, three and one Higher level qualificat­ions in West Lothian has risen by 17, 17 and 12 percentage points respective­ly.

Executive councillor for education, David Dodds, said:“It’s fantastic to see pupils in West Lothian achieve improving SCQF awards for an amazing eighth consecutiv­e year.

“Well done to all the pupils for their hard work and dedication, which was particular­ly challengin­g this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“My appreciati­on also goes to all the teachers and education staff who have supported our young people to achieve these outstandin­g results.

“Your efforts to help pupils reach their potential and focus on raising attainment has been phenomenal. Finally, huge thanks must also go to all the parents and carers, who play an essential role in the success of our young people.”
