Food chance at drop-in centre

- JOHN-PAUL CLARK

A West Lothian community centre has announced its latest initiatives to help combat food poverty during the pandemic.

The Courier has been reporting on Boghall Drop-in Centre throughout the health crisis as they have worked tirelessly to reach the most vulnerable people in their community.

Now they are launching their in-house food shop with items available to the wider community significantly cheaper than they retail elsewhere.

Added to that they are reaching out to families who have been troubled by Covid-19 and offering food packages.

The shop at their community centre in Boghall will be accessible only to those who sign up to the Community Adventure scheme.

At a cost of £2.50 per month, they get access to the shop and thereafter it costs a further £2.50 per visit, and a customer can go along as many times as they wish in a month.

On a shop they will be permitted to select five branded items, or ten unbranded.

Availability will differ but they plan to offer things like coffee and tinned food, and hygiene products like nappies, plus there will always be frozen food and fresh meat products in the fridge, like chicken and beef.

Throughout the pandemic, they have targeted various vulnerable demographics, like pensioners, and their latest focus is on families who have been marginalised in some manner by Covid-19. Heather McCormack, director at Boghall Drop-In, explained to the Courier that they are now looking to help families who have been affected by furlough or any other exceptional circumstances created by the contagion.

But she stressed, as always they will consider all requests for help.

She explained: “We are appealing to families and people who may be struggling financially to get in touch as at the moment we have access to fresh meats, bread and milk and are also supplying weekly packs of packed lunched items for parents who may be struggling with their kids for schools.” Heather also appealed for members of the community in West Lothian who would like to join their board of director to get in touch.
