Calvin is a step ahead for charity
Pupil takes on walking challenge to help the homeless
A big-hearted schoolboy has set himself the challenge of walking 31 miles throughout December to raise money for charity.
Linlithgow Primary School pupil Calvin Russell (7) decided he wanted to raise money to help homeless people.
Calvin’s teacher showed the class a video explaining that homeless people sleep outside, get cold and can be hungry, only eating porridge every day.
This inspired Calvin to want to do something to help, especially at Christmas.
And so he set a challenge to walk 31 miles in December and has raised nearly £900 already. All donations will go directly to The Rock Trust, a charity supporting young homeless people to build better futures.
Linlithgow Primary School’s head teacher, Clare Deas, said: “Calvin is an inspiration to us all. Everyone at Linlithgow Primary School is very proud of him.”
Children at the school have also been collecting empty crisp packets which are ironed together to make life-saving blankets for the homeless during winter.
The watertight bags, which need roughly 150 packets, help keep a sleeping bag dry and are a lifeline for rough sleepers tackling cold weather on the streets.
Children at the school are delighted that the packets are being reused for such a good purpose, instead of going to landfill decomposing, ensuring people without a home will not go cold this winter.
