Scottish Cup

Linlithgow Rose booked a Scottish Cup first round date at League Two outfit Brechin City after a Tommy Coyne strike four minutes from time saw them defeat Glasgow University.

The students took the lead just before half-time but the veteran striker helped turn the tide with a fine brace in the second half.

For a frontman who’s made his name by being ruthless inside the six-yard box, it was a surprise double with both being 20-yard efforts.

He levelled things up on the hour mark from just outside the box before sealing the win with a sumptuous half-volley from a similar distance with four minutes remaining.

It was a first taste of Scottish Cup action for Linlithgow’s American keeper, Brian Schwake, on loan from Livingston, and the teenage ace said he was delighted to progress to the next round.

He commented:“It was a great experience and you can tell that it’s a competition where every game is massive and a big challenge.

“We knew it was going to be tough but that if we played to the best of our ability that we’d give ourselves a good chance of progressing to the next round and that’s what we were able to do.”

He added:“We’ve put a decent run of wins together now and we just want to keep building on that, including the next round against Brechin.

“It’s a very good chance to test ourselves against a team a couple of leagues higher up than us. We will go there knowing that we can make it a really good game and all the boys are excited for the challenge.”

The Rose are back in East of Scotland Premier Division action on Saturday with a trip to Whitehill Welfare.
