Group brings festive cheer to older people

-

Christmas came early this year for members of a West Lothian charity which aims to combat social isolation and loneliness in older people.

This is the time when the West Lothian 50+ Network would normally hold their annual Christmas party.

But with current restrictions due to Covid- 19, there could be no events and no Christmas party this year.

Instead, the network’s committee co- ordinated the making and delivery of 430 bags of Christmas treats, one for each of their members.

The bags began to be delivered on December 13 by a small army of volunteers, surprising members at their homes across the county. The operation was conducted from the Network’s new Activity Centre in the centre of Bathgate.

Network convener, Anne Webster, explained: “Members of our Craft for Enjoyment group began by producing a hand-made card for every member, as well as decorating a bag to contain the treats. We approached a number of businesses and have a lot of people to thank for the contributions they made. The bags were partsupported by West Lothian Council’s Christmas Grant with Asda, Morrisons and Semi Chem supplying vouchers and discounts that helped boost the Christmas treats in the bags. In addition, Glen Turner and Glenmorangie provided some Christmas cheer, whilst Age Scotland donated calendars and Bathgate Community Council donated their recently published book of heritage walks in the town. We have also to thank the volunteers who have helped to distribute the bags, which, in addition to Network members, their families and staff, includes home care providers Home Instead Livingston and senior school pupils working towards the Caritas Award. Whilst this was a lot of work, we felt it was important for our members to feel that they are still valued as part of our organisation.”
