Congratula­tions on debating success

West Lothian Council has congratula­ted Broxburn Academy pupils Emma Bell and Ruby Ferguson for their success in reaching the finals of the Cambridge Union Schools Debating Competitio­n.

A joint motion by local councillor­s Diane Calder and Chris Horne praised the two S4 pupils as the latest from Broxburn to make the national school debating championsh­ips. Councilor Calder’s motion said: “They’ve had a great year in 2020 so far; made the semi‐finals of the Windsor Debating Competitio­n hosted by Eton, they won the Northern Juniors Debating Competitio­n to be crowned best u16s in the UK with Emma ranked as top speaker and Ruby as second, and made the silver finals of the LSE Schools competitio­n, up against two teams from St Paul’s and one from Eton. West Lothian Council would like to congratula­te them on their achievemen­ts in 2020 and wish them the very best of luck in the finals.” Councillor Horne’s motion added: “They are the only pupils in Scotland to have achieved this feat this year.”

He explained:“It is very important to keep your car in very good condition. A wellmainta­ined car provides you with the reliabilit­y and peace of mind you need to enjoy your car to the fullest. Here’s 5 easy-tofollow tips to keep your car’s reliabilit­y high.

“Get your car serviced on time. There is no way around this. It is of utmost importance to keep your car serviced as per its maintenanc­e schedule. For most cars, the service internal is either every six months or 10,000 Km or one year or 10,000 Km. Check the user’s manual.

“Check battery health, check tyre Pressure regularly and keep an eye on coolant, windshield washer and engine oil levels.

“Finally, always check the condition and tyre pressure of the spare tyre in your car. Make sure you have toolkit in the car, you have the jack needed to change the tyre and the spare tyre is in good condition. What if your car doesn’t have a standard spare tyre or no spare? Plan ahead so you know what to do and who will you call.”
