NHScall aimsto tackle cancer

-

NHS Lothian is encouraging people who have tested negative for Covid-19, but have a persistent new or different cough for three weeks or more, to contact their GP.

The NHS board has backed the new Scottish Government Detect Cancer Early campaign, as national statistics show around 25 per cent fewer lung cancers are being diagnosed now, compared to pre-Covid-19.

Dr Melanie Mackean, consultant medical oncology, NHS Lothian said it’s especially important for those over 40 to be checked. She said: “Whilst it’s probably nothing to worry about, it’s worth getting a persistent new or different cough checked, as it can be a sign of lung cancer. Finding lung cancer early makes it easier to treat, and improves your chance of survival.

“You won’t be wasting anyone’s time, so don’t put off contacting your GP practice. They want to hear from you.”

Speed bumps are going to be installed along Port Buchan in Broxburn as part of a pre-spring resurfacing project carried out by Scottish Canals.

The road will be closed to traffic from March 15 to 27 to allow the work to be carried out.

Benches are also going to be installed alongside the road improvements. Port Buchan is a popular spot in the summer.

Pedestrians will be able to use Port Buchan while the works are on-going but traffic will be diverted via Clarkson Road and Pyothall Road.

Councillor Janet Campbell, SNP group leader, said: “This is really good news for all residents of both Port Buchan and Pyothall Road.

“I have campaigned for these improvements since 2007 when I was first elected with both West Lothian Council and Scottish Canals and I am really pleased these works to improve this road will at last be carried out.”
