The Snuts hit number one

- DEBBIE HALL

Following a tense chart battle with former Disney star Demi Lovato, The Snuts become the first Scottish band to achieve a UK Number 1 for 14 years with their debut album, which boasted over 20,000 sales.

Produced by Tony Hoffer (Beck, Phoenix, M83) and recorded at the Firepit London, ‘WL’ encapsulates the band’s journey from four working class kids growing up with a dream in Whitburn, to becoming one of the UK’s most exciting and vital bands of the new decade.

From their day jobs working in construction to grafting on the ‘toilet circuit’ (a network of small UK venues) blood, sweat, tears and countless shows have been poured into the album.

Frontman Jack Cochrane said of their achievement: “This one is for all the fans that have proved it’s possible to get a band like us to Number 1.

“Every copy you bought of this record goes a long way. It’s old school and it’s beautiful.” Featuring their current Radio 1 playlisted single and love song for the ages, ‘Somebody Loves You’, a fresh take on fan and live favourite ‘Glasgow’, the hiphop driven ‘Elephants, the hauntingly heartfelt anthem ‘Always’ and main stage festival ready hymn, ‘All Your Friends’, the album has been entrancing critics all over.

And the band has had backing from the burgeoning lists of artists who came off the West Lothian production line in recent years. Lewis Capaldi said online: “I thought that I would ask all of you out there to please make sure that you go and buy, download and stream The Snuts brand new album WL which came out last Friday.

“It’s so close to number one and it’s the boys against Demi Lovato.

“Listen, we all love Demi Lovato but sometimes we have to make sacrifices. So go out there and get the record.”

Others lined up to pay tribute to The Snuts after the announcement was made that they hit number one, including Luke La Volpe and Mark Sharp and the Bicycle Thieves.
