Bathgate gymnast wins British Championship title
Bathgate gymnast Megan Docherty has proven herself to be the best in Britain but isn’t willing to stop there.
The 16-year-old picked up the overall gold medal alongside a gold and three silvers in the individual disciplines at the recent Disability Artistic British Championships and has set the Olympics as her future goal.
Megan, who has autism, was in sensational form at the Fenton Manor Sports Complex in Stoke-on-Trent as she finished top of the rankings in the beam while scooping silver medals in the bars, floor and vault to catapult her to the overall gold medal.
And the Cedarbank pupil is determined to reach the very top of her sport.
Speaking to the Courier, she said: “I’m super happy with my results and really, really proud of my performances.
“I worked really hard for this competition and went out there and did my best, so I’m pleased that I was able to win medals and the overall title.”
The teenager first took up the sport at the age of eight and currently trains with both West Lothian Artistic Gymnastics and City of Glasgow Gymnastics Club.
She was part of a hugely successful 14-strong Scottish team who won an impressive total of 75 medals at the competition.
It was Megan’s first event since lockdown and also the biggest of her career so far.
Mum Shona McIntyre said she is proud of her daughter’s hard work and dedication.
She commented: “Megan’s dream is to one day compete at the Olympic Games.
“She works incredibly hard and the future is hopefully very exciting for Megan.”
She added: “I am super proud of Megan.
“She works so hard and is so determined and is very dedicated to her sport.
“She inspires me daily.
“I’m truly honoured to be her mum and to raise such an amazing daughter.
“It is such a privilege to support and encourage her in her dreams.”
The proud mum also thanked the coaches who are helping her daughter make her dream come true.
She added: “We are also incredibly grateful to all her coaches for their hard work and dedication and all that that they give.”
