Popular baby names revealed for county
Oliver and Millie are the most popular names for boys and girls respectively in West Lothian over the past year.
Data from the National Records of Scotland revealed that Millie has replaced Olivia as the most popular girl’s name in the county.
Oliver remains the most popular name for boys in West Lothian, as it has been since 2020, taking over from Thomas’s top spot in 2019.
National records show that in West Lothian there were 20 boys called Oliver, and 14 girls called Millie. The top five boys names for West Lothian in 2021 were Oliver (20), Mason (15), Leo (15), Noah (10), and Harris (10).
Oliver keeps its place as top boy’s name for the second year running, Leo and Noah maintain their third and fourth space while Daniel and Jacob have been knocked off by Mason and Harris.
The top five girl’s names for West Lothian in 2021 were Millie (14), Lily (13), Sophia (11), Amelia (11), and Olivia (11).
Olivia has dropped from the most popular girl’s name to the fifth most popular and the rest of last year’s top five (Isla, Ava, Emily, and Ella) all dropped off the top five, replaced by Millie, Lily, Sophia, and Amelia.
Across Scotland as a whole however, Olivia has overtaken Isla to become Scotland’s most popular name for baby girls for the second time. Jack remains the most popular name for baby boys in Scotland for the 14th year in succession, followed by Noah and Leo.
Lyla shot up 56 places in the top 100 girls’ names to 74th overall, while Blake rose 46 places and Rowan 41.
Carson has seen the largest increase in the top 100 boy’s’names in 2021, rising 42 places to 83rd, while Struan has jumped 37 places and Myles is up by 35.
Director of Statistical Services, Pete Whitehouse said: “Almost 12 per cent of baby girls were given a name that no other girl was registered with in 2021. Almost nine per cent of boys had unique names for births last year. Together with the growing range of names being used this means it’s far less common for children to share their name with their classmates than it was for their parents or grandparents.”
