Why does WSCC get it so wrong?

-

West Sussex County Council clearly believe cutting grass in a lockdown is essential work?

How is it that WSCC manage to continually get it wrong?

We have grass cut early in the year and now when there is nothing for them to cut, yet when it is needed to be cut, the cry goes up: ‘Not yet’.

Not only does WSCC have money to frivolously throw away, but total disregard for burrowing hibernating insects that think they are safe until spring.

No doubt the money from tranche two cycle lanes they have claimed will disappear into some place to be used elsewhere.

I can guarantee councillors will cry that they have no money and hold out the bowl for ‘more’ from central Government.

It beggars belief that the people we vote in spend money like water, then feel they need more to throw away. But if the taxpayer asks for potholes to be repaired, roads to be resurfaced, provision made for cycling, there is no money.

Just a minute, we need essential work to create six lanes for cars, but very poor provision for pedestrians.

Now we have far warmer autumn and winters, one would anticipate that if the roads ever need treating for low temperatures all would be well, but no: the road network is minimized to reduce even that.

Where does all our council tax actually get spent? Not the X million here and there we get in our tax bill, but let us see that broken down into budgets per department. If WSCC has managed to ‘save’ X millions of pounds, why wasn’t it saved earlier and saved us tax payers from the increases demanded?

It cant all be spent on golden handshakes and redundancy packages, can it?

I realise it is simple to criticize, and WSCC can get things right; look at the conversion to LEDs for lighting.

Of course had that work been in place a few years ago, when all street lighting was changed not only would the savings accrued earlier, but the money to be spent to change all the street lighting to LED now need not be paid out.

It is great that we have the latest stuff for the fire and rescue service, just a pity that those further away will have to wait longer, now the sub station in Harwood or Kings Road area has been scrapped.

It may well be that the response times are within the laid down requirements, but it remains the fact that some residents will have to put up with a longer delay than at present.

Yes, I know, we don’t have a fire all the time, but tell that to a family trapped in their house one day in the future.

On a brighter side, don’t the wardens do a wonderful job? Looking at the Neighbourhood Council website, they have been extremely busy - as always.

If only we had a few more in Horsham, the town would be a safer, cleaner place with less miscreants causing problems. Well done, Horsham District Council!
