A 17-year-old student from Roffey will be cycling 500 miles throughout January to raise funds for a mental health charity.

Charlie Beckwith, who is currently studying media, graphics and product design at Collyer’s, hopes to average 20 miles a day taking on several routes around West Sussex.

He completed 132 miles within the first five days of the year and has so far raised more than £600 for the charity Mind which supports people with mental health issues..

He said: “This month will be difficult with the weather in January being cold, and the days being short as I have to attend college. But, I will push myself to achieve my goal of 500 miles.

“With the current Covid situation, mental health issues have become more apparent with people feeling more isolated in lockdowns and having no one to talk to.

“I want exercise to be used by people struggling as it can help people to clear their minds and feel better about themselves.

“I can understand the struggles of mental health as me and people I am close with have had encounters with issues.

“I want to show that getting outdoors and keeping fit can really help the mind to mend. I have used this for my own wellbeing and I suggest it to anyone who is struggling. Also, making sure to talk about the issues you’re facing to people close to you will help greatly.

“I’m hoping that with the money I raise it will aid ‘Mind’ to get the correct practices to more people that are struggling with their mental health.”
