Sussex stars out to have a ton of fun

- JACK BUTLER

A host of Sussex players have been retained for the first edition of The Hundred.

The new short-format domestic competition was due to launch last summer but was postponed for a year because of the Covid pandemic.

As expected, power-hitting batsman Luke Wright, is one of 57 newly retained players. The Sussex skipper will make the journey north to play for the Trent Rockets for the duration of the competition.

The Sussex bowling quartet of Chris Jordan, Jofra Archer, Tymal Mills and George Garton will all be playing for Southern Brave after being retained earlier this year.

Sussex’s Phil Salt (Manchester Originals) and Rashid Khan (Trent Rockets) will also be involved in the 100-ball competition.

The retention window for the men’s competition is now closed, with the remaining spots across the eight teams filled in the men’s players draft, which will take place on the February 23. It is likely that a few more Sussex players will be picked up - including Ollie Robinson.

James Kirtley, the Sussex T20 head coach, praised Robinson, who is on stand-by for the England Test squad in India.

“It will be feasible that Ollie Robinson will get taken with the (Hundred) draft – he is too good a bowler”, Kirtley outlined.

In the women’s competition, Sussex’s Freya Davis will play for the London Spirit, Linsey Smith heads to the Northern Superchargers and Nancy Harman makes her way to the Trent Rockets.
