Fly-tipping fears after tip plans

Changes planned at Horsham’s waste dump have prompted new fears of an increase in fly-tipping in the area.

West Sussex County Council plans to trial a booking system at the rubbish site at Hop Oast next month after reports of queues of cars backing up to the A24 at busy times.

But there are fears that there will be an increase in waste being dumped illegally as more restrictions are imposed.

Horsham Councillor Christine Costin (Lib Dem) spoke out about her concerns following one of the latest flytipping incidents in the town last week when old furniture was dumped in Horsham’s North Street subway.

“The North Street Subway looks dingy and grim enough without the rubbish added to it,” she said.

And, she said: “People are being even more callous with their rubbish. littering and fly-tipping looks revolting and is a hazard to health.

“That’s why we need recycling points and userfriendly municipal tips that are easily reached and readily available.”

She pointed out that Horsham’s waste site had already had its opening hours reduced and was shut two days a week.

“People should be able to get to the tip when they need it,” she said.

She also criticised ‘red tape’ with the need for tip visitors now having to produce documentary proof they are West Sussex residents.

“The easier you can make recycling, the better and the less likely you are to have flytipping.”

The furniture dumped in the North Street subway was quickly removed after ‘Team Forest’ – local councillors Colin Minto, Godrey Newman and David Skipp – reported the incident.

The incident came as new figures showed that flytipping on public land in the Horsham area had increased again.
