Where there’s a problem...
Nicola Peel posts those words proudly on her website. Nicola Peel – Environmentalist, Inspirational Speaker and Solutionist. She acknowledges there are major problems with global warming, pollution and environmental degradation. But she is not defeated. That’s why she has spent the last 20 years tirelessly writing, making films and speaking – and showing the way to practical solutions to the number one problem of our times.
Nicola and fellow speaker Richard Shuker will be appearing at Horsham Climate Café on Saturday, April 3 to show that solutions are practicable, sustainable and fit fairly and squarely with the lifestyle and choices of ordinary women and men everywhere.
First out of the blocks at our climate café will be Richard. It won’t be financial advice, he stresses. But as a man with a lifetime of experience in financial services, Richard knows that there is a growing number of people who want to solve our problems, while at the same time safeguarding the wellbeing of their families and communities. Richard will be asking some serious questions. Such as are you actually looking to make money or just donations? Because they are not the same thing. What is responsible investing, and how can we do it? Above all, are there practical examples? Richard will also have a shrewd look on one or two current angsts, like greenwashing and bitcoin,
But your average newly planted saplings are going to take a hundred years to start soaking up CO2 the way a mature Ecuadorian rainforest does. That’s why her scheme ‘pay to breathe’ takes carbon offsetting to a different level. The idea is that we pay the indigenous people of the rainforests to keep their trees standing up. It’s easy to monitor this with modern satellite technology, and payments can be quickly suspended when gaps appear in the forest. Well, if you were on a submarine, you’d take care of the guy who runs the oxygen tanks, wouldn’t you? Nicola has spent years in Ecuador dealing with all the factors – people, geography, money, politics – and knows that this is a hard-edged practicable solution.
“Immensely worthy and admirable but will it work?” Up to now that has always been the problem confronting the environmentally aware as they struggle to make people aware of the terrible danger confronting us. Richard and Nicola will show that, yes, it will work. And can even be rewarding. There’ll be a lively discussion, and all ideas and contributions will be welcome.
